Low Fat High Fiber Diets Decrease Hormones

In a new study to test the effects of a low fat, high fiber diet 39 healthy men were studied. The men were on a high fat, low fiber diet and after 8 weeks switched to a low fat, high fiber diet with the same amount of calories.
The men lost 1 Kg of body weight. Total caloric intake, energy expenditure and activity index were not changed.

After changing their diet their hormone levels changed:

Mean serum testosterone (T) concentration fell
Significant decreases in serum free testosterone, 5 alpha dihydrotestosterone and adrenal androgens.
Serum estradiol and sex hormone binding globulin showed smaller decreases. Parallel decreases in urinary excretion of some testicular and adrenal androgens were demonstrated.

"We conclude that reduction in dietary fat intake (and increase in fiber) results in 12% consistent lowering of circulating androgens levels without changing the clearance."
