Diets: Some Carbs Help Burn Fat!
Both food and the human body never always seem to surprise and amaze me. When you think eating carbs is necessary for the body, but eating too many usually to bad, you find out that the types of carbs are not created equal. Sure sugar is usually worse than whole grain foods, but now US and Australian scientists have found that resistant starch consumption promotes lipid oxidation, or it other words eat these carbs and your body will burn fat more easily.
Work at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Center for Human Nutrition in Denver, Colorado found the impact of RS on fat metabolism. Four groups were monitored. People eating
0%, 2.7% 5.4% 10.7%
of resistant starch as a percentage of total carbohydrate.
Fat Burning
1 g/360 minutes in the 0% group 5.5 g/360 minutes in the 2.7% group 10 g/360 minutes in the 5.4% group 1.5 g/360 minutes in the 10.7% group
It seems that the best effects are achieved when the resistant starch is about 5% of your total carbs.
Resistant starch has a long history and can be found naturally in many unprocessed foods. These include bananas, lentils and raw potatoes, But also in minimally processed foods, like cooked legumes and muesli; and some more highly processed foods such as breakfast cereals (e.g. cornflakes) and some breads (e.g. bread crusts).
“ These data indicate that replacement of 5.4% of total dietary carbohydrate with RS significantly increased post-prandial lipid oxidation and therefore could decrease fat accumulation in the long-term.”
