Building Muscle not age related, maybe food?
Researchers from Stanford University have made a very interesting discovery. It seems that muscle cell growth ability does NOT decrease with age.
The older you get the harder it is to build muscle and the longer it takes to rebuild muscle after working out and training. Until now the general idea was that muscle cells age and simply need more time to recover.
In this recent study researchers showed it is actually not the muscle cells that cause muscles to grow slower when you get older.
Researchers tested older and younger muscle cells and put them in “old” and “young” blood:
Old muscles cells – old blood Young muscles cells – young blood Old muscles cells – young blood Young muscles cells – old blood
The first two showed results that you would expect. The old cells in young blood serum however showed results you would expect from young cells and the young cells in old blood serum showed results you would except from old muscle cells.
This shows that muscle cells don’t age but your blood changes with age giving your muscle cells not all the ingredients they need to achieve optimum muscle growth.
This research is important for two reasons; 1 it helps researchers understand aging and will help find ways to slow and stop aging, 2 it shows the importance of food since most of what you eat will help you stay healthy and translates to what ends up in your blood stream. We already know that eating healthy helps you stay younger and grow more muscle, or keep your body in shape. It seems we just don’t know enough of this yet to get better results.
