Polyphenols in Beer fight growth of breast cancer cells?
Researchers from the Universidade do Porto, Portugal, say that three different polyphenols, compounds found in wine, beer and tea, appear to significantly decrease breast cancer cells. According to the researches the effect of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), xanthohumol and resveratrol, respectively found in significant concentrations in tea, beer and red wine, have significant effect on the growth of a human breast cancer cell.
But they warned that the study does not call for women to increase alcohol consumption as a means of breast cancer prevention. Numerous studies have found that regular intake of alcohol affects the levels of important female hormones. When alcolhol is consumed women's breast cells are exposed to higher levels of oestrogen. This may in turn trigger the cells to become cancerous. Different studies have linked alcohol consumption to a higher breast cancer risk.
