Running: High fat diet and exercise performance, just a little lower
Very little is known about high fat diets and endurance performance. If you are considering a high fat/moderate protein diet, Atkins diet or low carb diet how would that influence your running or cycling?
A new study examined the effects of a high-fat/moderate protein diet on
Submaximal performance Maximal performance Supramaximal performance
The tests included
45-min timed ride were performed A maximal oxygen consumption test two 30-s Wingate anaerobic tests
The test were done in two groups, a normal group and a moderate protein/high fat group, before and after 6 weeks of diet and training,
Results:
1) Body mass of the moderate protein/high fat group decreased significantly: -2,2 kg 2) Maximal oxygen consumption decreased significantly but was unaffected when corrected for body mass 3) increased fat oxidation during exercise 4) small decrements in peak power output and endurance performance 5) perceived exertion
The researchers do note that the effects in power and endurance can be part due to the perceived exertion. In most people the mind is simply a limiting factor in performance if you feel tired you simply will not perform as well.
