Health: Soy Protein helps lower bad cholesterol, new evidence
Soy protein has no big scientific backup of lowering cholesterol, yet. But with every new study more evidence is gathered. In a new study the effect on LDL cholesterol, considered the bad type, was evidently there.
Women who ate or drank at least 6g of soy protein per day had mean blood levels of LDL-cholesterol 12.4 per cent lower than that in women who consumed less than 0.5g per day. (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition vol 80, no 5, pp1391-1396)
A glass of soy milk contains about 10 grams of soy protein. There are however different types of soy milk, sweetened and unsweetened. The sweetened type contains a lot of unhealthy plain sugar.
Other soy products include tofu, tempeh, soy flower and even soy protein.
