High Protein diet breaks down Muscle
A diet using protein giving 36% of the total energy results in the breakdown of muscle. When comparing a high, normal and low protein diet in rats researches found that the 36% protein diet resulted in a breakdown of muscle. The muscles of the normal diet rats contained more protein, while the high protein diet resulted in more water in the muscles.
Since there has been little research (and interest) in high protein diets in the past not too much is know about high protein diets. This is probably also a reason why many diets like atkins and other low carb diets advice to get more energy from fat, not just protein. And it may also explain why people following high protein diets loose more pounds during the first few weeks of such a diet.
