refined Carbohydrates linked to epidemic of type 2 diabetes
Research published in the American Journal of Nutrition has linked the amount of carbohydrates in the American diet to the spread of the diabetes 2 epidemic. Diabetes 2 and related medical conditions have been typical for the 20th century and are related to the total caloric intake by people. Eat more and you get overweight. But until now carbohydrates where not considered the main cause. In the past different types of unhealthy fat was considered THE source.
The researchers reviewed data from 1909 to 1997 and were able to link diabetes 2 to the caloric components of our diet: fat, protein and carbohydrates. This just means that when you eat too much you get overweight and you have a higher risk of diabetes 2.
But the researches went one step further. Which of the calories from fat, protein and carbohydrates would have a bigger part in this?
Carbohydrates in the American diet were directly linked to the prevalence of type 2 diabetes. Fiber was negatively linked with type 2 diabetes. So eating Fiber in the diet seems to be a way to lower your risk. Protein and fat were not associated with type 2 diabetes.
In January the World Health Organization released a draft road map for tackling obesity, One of their points: reduce sugary foods in the Diet. The US government attempted to undermine these recommendations. Pressure from the food industry?
