Fish Oil/Fish Diet during Pregnancy produces bigger babies
New research published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health shows that eating fish decreases restricted growth in unborn babies. Normally 1 in 10 babies is restricted in growth possibly because of restricted blood flow in the placenta, decreasing nutrition given to the baby. With mothers who ate fish as part of their diet it was 1 in 8.
The researchers looked at 12,000 pregnant women and how much fish they ate after the 32nd week of pregnancy. On average the women at about a third of a small can of tuna each day about 150 mg of omega-3 oil. In most fist oils supplements 12% is omega-3. This would be the equivalent of 1250 mg of Fish Oil (2 or 3 capsules depending on brand).
In general pregnant women and prospective mothers are advised not to eat fish like shark, marlin and swordfish because they contain relatively higher levels of mercury. Tuna may also not be the best choice because of chemicals found in their fat. In these cases a eating a healthy fish or fish oil supplements may prove to be a better choice.
