When Serena Williams returned to the French Open Tennis Championships at Roland-Garros in Paris, France this week, she debuted a new collection of custom-designed Nike performance tennis apparel. The apparel features vibrant colors with beautifully etched designs created with Nike’s innovative laser technology. Serena’s custom-made items include a cropped white leather jacket; a mesh tennis dress and sling; a competition short and top; along with a signature warm up.

“I love the color pink and roses,” said Serena Williams. “Only Nike can create an apparel collection that incorporates my passions and is grounded in performance.”

“For the French Open, we wanted to create something very special for Serena,” said Mindy Grossman, Vice President of Global Apparel for Nike. “We took Serena’s inspirations and translated them into a collection that emphasizes bold styling and color while providing her the performance features needed for the elite level of play at Roland-Garros.”

The collection features a one-of-a-kind white leather jacket with “Serena” laser etched across the back. Serena will also debut a custom-designed hot pink tennis dress constructed of mesh and Nike Dri-FIT fabric, with a matching mesh sling for maximum cooling and comfort.

For the jacket, tennis dress and mesh sling, Nike utilized the precision of a laser to create intricate and beautiful etchings across the garments. The white leather jacket features a laser etching of “Serena” across the back and the mesh dress and sling feature laser-cut floral and rose designs across the garments. The laser-etched rose is applied to the back of the dress with Nike’s No Sew technology, which bonds fabric in a seamless construction to limit chaffing or irritation.

Serena will warm up in a viola-colored jacket with matching pants. “Serena” is embroidered on the back. Her pant also has the letter “S” on the back pocket. During tournament play, Serena will wear a sleeveless zip-front sport top and a matching competition skirt or short. The apparel is constructed of stretch Dri-FIT fabric, Nike’s signature moisture management technology.

No Sew
Nike No Sew increases comfort and performance by eliminating bulky seams and thus chaffing and irritation. This innovation eliminates the old “cut-and-sew” method of construction by laminating pieces of fabric together.

Dri-FIT
Nike’s proprietary, tested and re-tested, moisture-wicking technology, Nike Dri-FIT helps sustain body temperature by drawing sweat away from the skin and moving it to the outside of the fabric where it quickly evaporates.

Laser
As Nike designers were researching the use of a laser technology to enhance athletic performance in footwear such as mobility, breathability, personalized fit and comfort, it was discovered that the innovation can also be applied for other purposes. The laser allows for precision and exact detailing no scissor or cutting device can achieve.
