Weight Trainging decreases arteries Health, Aerobic Exercise, Running a must?
Reductions in the compliance of central arteries exert a number of adverse effects on cardiovascular function and disease risk. If your arteries get "stiffer" you artery health suffers. And apparently is weight training not got for your arteries.
In a new study healthy men where split up in two groups. One group was asked to do nothing, just continue with their lives. The other group was asked to do weight training for 3 times a week. After 4 months their arteries where not as flexible any more.
"Carotid arterial compliance decreased 19% and the beta-stiffness index increased 21%".
After another 4 months of detraining our weight trainers where healthy again.
"Endurance training is efficacious in increasing arterial compliance in healthy adults.... In marked contrast to the beneficial effect of regular aerobic exercise, several months of resistance training "reduces" central arterial compliance in healthy men."
So if you are doing weight training it might be a good idea to give your arteries a workout once in a while too.
